A Lifetime of Learning

What is the ELO?

The ELO (“Extended Learning Opportunities”) is an organization that holds weekly lectures on a variety of subjects in October to December and February to April each year. Its members are mostly from Erin, Ontario but also come from surrounding communities such as Georgetown, Belfountain, and Caledon.  Most ELO members are of retirement age.

ELO History:

In May of 1981, a steering committee met at Erin District High School to discuss how to set up a program for continuing education for seniors in Erin.  Jack Dyce of Ninth line, Erin initiated this committee, having researched programs in Etobicoke called “Learning Unlimited” and “Third Age Learning” out of York University.  It was determined that funds to start up the Erin program could be available through a one- time grant from the Ministry of Health and Welfare.  In subsequent committee meetings possible lecture topics and a program schedule was discussed and the name (ELO,) logo, constitution were approved.
In October, 1981 the first lecture of the ELO was delivered at the Erin Legion. Twenty-five new members were in attendance.

MEMBERSHIP:   In order to make ELO lectures available to more members without violating the Legion fire code (200 maximum), there will be two types of membership:

  1. IN PERSON:  You may choose to attend in person or by Zoom for each lecture.  If the IN PERSON memberships exceed 200, for applications in excess of 200, ZOOM ONLY memberships will be available.  Pay for your membership early!

  2. ZOOM ONLY:  Enjoy lectures at home by Zoom only – No personal attendance.  Only one member of the household needs to purchase the membership.

The fee for the Fall lecture series for either membership type will be the same at $20.00.

When you register, you must choose which membership you want.  Your choice will hold for the Fall 2026 lectures.  You may change your choice when you register for the Winter 2027 lectures.

Sometimes Internet Providers block emails with attachments.  We plan to share the list of lectures for the Fall 2026 series by late September, at that time, you will find them posted under "Lecture Schedule".  If the speaker is able to share their presentation, it will be posted under "PDFs and Documents" a day or two after the lecture. If you don’t receive the email with the lectures, notify us at contact@erinelo.ca.
